About the course

The ServSafe® California Food Handler Program is a highly interactive online training course and 40-question test that covers critical food safety information and techniques. Approximately 60 to 90 minutes in length, the training uses the same principles and instructional design as the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification online course to deliver consistent food safety training for all foodservice employees.

The ServSafe California Food Handler Program training covers key topic areas:
  • basic food safety
  • personal hygiene
  • cross-contamination and allergens
  • time and temperature
  • cleaning and sanitation.

Food handlers must have a California Food Handler Card on or before July 1. Employees hired after June 1 have 30 days following the date of hire to acquire a food handler card and provide a copy to their employer to keep on file.
